Chirkunda was initially notified as Notified Area Committee(NAC) in year 1986 followed by Nagar Panchayat in Jan,2008 with 20 wards. According to the Population Census in the year 2011, Chirkunda has a population of 45,508. The males comprise 52 percent of the population and females 48 percent. Chirkunda has an average literacy rate of 64 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent; with male literacy of 71 percent and female literacy of 56 percent. About 14 percent of the population is under 6 years of age. The official language and most widely spoken language are Hindi and Bengali language. Other languages which are used here are Khortha and Marwari. Hinduism is the prominent religion here, followed by Islam. However the whole area is influenced by the Bengal culture because Chirkunda is situated near Jharkhand-Bengal Border.
