Introduction
Chirkunda is situated amidst rich coal mines of Jharia and Raniganj with the Area of 6.26SqKm near NH2 of District Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Major industries in and around this area includes refractory making, coal making, iron and steel plants, food processing, retailing, and service industry. Due to its strategic location, Chirkunda has many big business houses of the Dhanbad district. The presence of DVC's Maithon Dam and Panchet Dam, power stations is another major factor for the development of industries in and around this area. Maithon Power Limited, a Joint venture of Tata Power and DVC Maithon sorrounded by the rivers Barakar & Damodar.

Due to its strategic location, Chirkunda has many big business houses of the Dhanbad district. The presence of DVC's Maithon Dam and Panchet Dam, power stations is another major factor for the development of industries in and around this area. Maithon Power Limited, a Joint venture of Tata Power and DVC Maithon sorrounded by the rivers Barakar & Damodar. Chirkunda was initially notified as Notified Area Committee(NAC) in year 1986 followed by Nagar Panchayat in Jan,2008 with 20 wards. According to the Population Census in the year 2011, Chirkunda has a population of 45,508. The males comprise 52 percent of the population and females 48 percent. Chirkunda has an average literacy rate of 64 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent; with male literacy of 71 percent and female literacy of 56 percent. About 14 percent of the population is under 6 years of age. The official language and most widely spoken language are Hindi and Bengali language. Other languages which are used here are Khortha and Marwari. Hinduism is the prominent religion here, followed by Islam. However the whole area is influenced by the Bengal culture because Chirkunda is situated near Jharkhand-Bengal Border.
