Seraikella Nagar Panchayat was established in 1889 by late Raja Udit Narayan Singh Deo But in 1989 it was constituted under Bengal Municipal Act of 1884.
Now, Seraikela is a Nagar Panchayat city in district of Saraikela Kharsawan, Jharkhand. The Seraikela city is divided into 10 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Seraikela Nagar Panchayat has population of 14,252 of which 7,450 are males while 6,802 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Out of total population, 4,460 were engaged in work or business activity. Of this 3,687 were males while 773 were females. In census survey, worker is defined as person who does business, job, service, and cultivator and labour activity. Of total 4460 working population, 79.75 % were engaged in Main Work while 20.25 % of total workers were engaged in Marginal Work.

Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 1675 which is 11.75 % of total population of Seraikela (NP). In Seraikela Nagar Panchayat, Female Sex Ratio is of 913 against state average of 948. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Seraikela is around 897 compared to Jharkhand state average of 948. Literacy rate of Seraikela city is 83.80 % higher than state average of 66.41 %. In Seraikela, Male literacy is around 90.15 % while female literacy rate is 76.86 %.

Seraikela Nagar Panchayat has total administration over 2,975 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorize to build roads within Nagar Panchayat limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.
